Braunův betlém - Kuks

www.hospital-kuks.cz/en/

BRAUN´S NATIVITY

The rich plastic decoration of the hospital and spa were not the only things with which Count Špork wanted to make Kuks and of course himself famous. In addition, he carried out the idea of building a sort of stone theatre of Baroque statues in the open air. He chose a nearby site of  ,, Nový les,, ( New Forest), near Žireč, and again entrusted the work to Matthias Bernard Braun.

There, between 1726 and 1732, Braun´s work culminated in a  certain sense. He carved into the rocks a group of Biblical and other scenes which bears the name of

,,Nativity,, and which, in spite of the toll taken by the elements over the years, still remains a unique example of Baroque sculpture at its best in Central Europe.
